Courses for Seniors

Introduction to Computers and Internet

Free* for Seniors 60+

Course Description

Not everyone had the opportunity to grow up with computers. This workshop is for people who have never really used a computer before, and might find them a little scary. It’s about teaching you that computers aren’t terrifying or to be avoided, but an incredibly useful tool for communicating, shopping, getting information and entertaining yourself.

You’ve heard of the internet but aren’t really sure of what it can offer you, let alone how to get connected to it, which type of internet connection to choose, or how to use it. This workshop will start with the basics and by the end you will be confidently surfing the internet finding music, books and movies online.

This workshop will walk you first through the basics of what a computer is, what its components are and how it’s operated. We’ll teach you how to use a mouse and keyboard. Then we’ll put those skills to good use to create your first document on the computer. Than we will walk you through the very basics of the internet: how it works, how to get online and how to surf the web.

We’ll go through some of the features of your web browser that can make navigating the web much easier. Second, we’ll look at important browser add-ons that will let you see all the web has to offer, including videos and music. Then we’ll get you started with some of the best sites for common things you might like to do on the internet. Finally, we’ll provide some tips for keeping yourself safe online, how to play the media you’ve downloaded, and how you can download new programs for your computer.
