NextGEN - Innovative Program Prepares Young People Of Goulburn & Shellharbour for Careers of the Future
1 January 2018: Today Executive Officer of Kiama and Shoalhaven Community Colleges, Helen Zwicker, announced the next NextGEN Digital programs will be running it's final course intake in Kiama/ Shellharbour in March 2018.
NextGEN Digital is funded through the Department Of Employment’s Empowering YOUth Program and is designed to prepare young people aged 15-24 for a career in IT and Digital Media, an industry that is forecast to experience a 76% increase by 2020, more than any other Australian sector.
Having already run many successful NextGEN programs in Wollongong and Nowra, Kiama Community College is looking forward to giving it's final intake of young people and businesses in regional areas the opportunity to take advantage of the program.
NextGEN Digital is much more than a training program- participants actually use the skills they learn to undertake real digital tasks for real local businesses and get paid for it. Examples of digital tasks that students undertake include website creation, graphic design and search engine optimisation. “The experience has been fantastic. Our website is beautiful and clean. We are really happy” says Sally Stevenson, from Illawarra Women’s Health Centre, of the work that participants undertook for her organisation. The program is just one of a handful of innovative funded programs across the nation tackling youth unemployment in a fresh way to prepare young peoplein regional areas for jobs of the future.
Sandra S, a parent of a participant in a recent NextGEN program says of her son, “He’s really enjoyed it. He talks about it all the time. Its given him more confidence in his work, he’s loved it!”
Open to participants aged 15-24 who may find it challenging to gain sustainable employment, the course is suitable for those with interests in a broad range of areas such as graphic design, web design, gaming, social media, journalism and coding. NextGEN involves a three staged program over sixteen weeks. Students undertake a Cert II in skills for Work and Vocational Pathways with a focus on digital media to improve job readiness, before completing paid work for real clients through the Digital Business Hub under the mentorship of a social media expert. Integral to the NextGEN program is intensive support for individual students facing barriers to employment and study. Programs Co-ordinators work with students to pathway them to further work placement or employment.
NextGEN is a highly inclusive program with equally high levels of support. Participants, regardless of any barrier to employment that they face, are encouraged to apply.
