Frequently Asked Questions
What is a USI and how do I get one?
A USI (Unique Student Identifier) is a number issued to students in Australia to help track their educational records across various institutions. It’s required for anyone undertaking nationally recognised training, such as vocational education and training (VET) courses. The USI helps link together a student’s records and qualifications from different training providers in a single, accessible account.
To get a USI, you can follow these steps:
Visit the official USI website: Go to www.usi.gov.au.
Create an account: If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to create a myGovID account (not to be confused with the myGov portal), which you’ll use to access your USI account.
Fill in your details: You’ll need personal information like your name, birthdate, and email.
Receive your USI: Once you’ve completed the process, you’ll be assigned a unique 10-character number, which you can use for all your studies moving forward.
If you already have a USI but can’t remember it, you can retrieve it on the USI website as well.

What equipment do I need for the Outdoor Leadership programs?
Most of the equipment needed to participate in activities is provided for use during the course. Below is a summary and we have found that once the group gets together there is typically enough equipment for everyone to go around. Feel free to discuss your individual needs or concerns with your trainer.
We provide the following for use on training days
Water Activities: kayaks, paddles, and PFD’s
Bushwalking: navigation equipment provided. We have access to a limited number of backpacks, tents and sleeping mats to loan out for overnight expeditions, we can discuss your individual needs and source / assist with equipment before the bushwalking topic commences mid-course.
Roping Activities: Everything needed to participate is provided for use during the training, some people choose to bring their own equipment (harness & helmet etc) we are fine with this, we just need to inspect as per our operating procedures to ensure it meet standards.
What is the Pre- LLN Assessment?
After you apply for enrollment, you will need to complete an online Pre-LLN Assessment. This assessment evaluates your language, literacy, and numeracy skills in relation to the qualification you want to study. We conduct this assessment to ensure that students have the best chance of successfully completing the Certificate.
If your LLN results do not meet the minimum entry requirements for the qualification, there are various pathways available to consider. The best pathway for you will depend on your individual needs and circumstances, and we will discuss this with you personally.
Why do I need to provide my ID and Medicare card (or VISA status)?
Evidence of living or working in NSW as well as your citizenship status are both required to be eligible for State Government funded training.
Depending on your circumstances and which funding you are applying for, we will request other documents such as proof of Centrelink benefit, a letter from a general practitioner or a referral from a support agency.
At the time of enrolment, it is advised to have your license or another government document clearly stating your name and NSW address as well as a Medicare card or other citizenship document such as birth certificate or visa papers with you.
What kind of student support does Kiama Community College Ltd provide?
KCC offers a comprehensive range of support services to students through its Student Support Officers (SSOs). These officers assist both students and trainers, ensuring that learners receive the guidance they need throughout their studies. They can refer students to appropriate services, including community organisations, employment services, educational facilities, and literacy and numeracy support where necessary.
SSOs work closely with students to develop pathway plans that align with their future goals, providing individualised support to cater to their specific needs. Their assistance extends beyond course completion, offering post-educational support to help students transition into further studies or employment. They also help students secure voluntary work placements or gain valuable work experience.
For those interested in further education, SSOs promote training opportunities available at KCC or other RTOs. Additionally, they provide job search skills training and can directly connect students with employers and organisations to improve their chances of securing employment. Support is also available for job applications, resume writing, and interview skills.
If students experience difficulties with their courses, SSOs can develop tailored learning strategies to help them succeed. They also liaise with trainers when needed to ensure students receive the best possible support. The ultimate goal of the Student Support Officers is to enable all students to successfully complete their courses.
This is a free, private, and confidential service available to all students.
